It is also a category where quotes are routinely not comparable — “surgical tape, 2.5 cm × 9.1 m” can mean four different backing materials and three different adhesive systems, at very different price points. Adhesive Systems: Where Skin Compatibility Is Decided
The backing gets the name, but the adhesive determines both skin experience and complaint rates.
Zinc oxide is the traditional system: high initial tack and holding power, familiar in cloth tapes. Its downsides are potential residue and a harsher removal experience on fragile skin.
Acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives are the modern default for PE, silk and paper tapes: hypoallergenic, latex-free, stable over time, and consistent from lot to lot. If a target market is sensitive to skin-reaction complaints, specify acrylic and ask for the supporting biocompatibility data.
Hot-melt adhesives are the budget option. They can perform acceptably in temperate climates, but soften in heat and humidity — a relevant question if your containers cross the tropics or your market is hot year-round. Ask explicitly which system a low quote is based on.
Silicone adhesives sit at the premium end: atraumatic removal and repositionability, increasingly requested by elderly-care and wound-care buyers in Europe and North America. Sizes, Rolls and Packaging Formats
Widths follow a near-universal ladder: 1.25 cm, 2.5 cm, 5 cm, 7.5 cm and 10 cm. Common lengths are 5 m and 9.1 m (10 yards); confirm whether a quoted length is relaxed or stretched for cloth tapes. Beyond the roll itself, packaging is a real cost line: plain rolls shrink-wrapped in dozens for hospital bulk, individual boxes for retail, or rolls on a plastic spool with a protective cover and cutter for premium retail. Serrated-edge spools that let nurses tear one-handed are a small feature that wins tenders. Inner-box and carton quantities vary by width, so ask for a packing list per SKU when comparing quotes.
Certifications and Documents to Request
Medical adhesive tapes are Class I medical devices in most markets. Before ordering, request: the CE documentation for the exact product family under the EU MDR, the factory’s ISO 13485 certificate, adhesion and tensile test reports for the specific SKU, and — for the US market — confirmation of FDA establishment registration and device listing. As with dressings, match the certificate scope to the actual product: paperwork for PE tape does not automatically cover a silicone-adhesive SKU. QC Checks Before Shipment
A practical pre-shipment inspection for tape covers: peel adhesion and unwind force against the datasheet, tensile strength, width and length verification (short-length rolls are the classic complaint in this category), perforation and tear quality for PE, water resistance where claimed, core integrity after transport simulation, label content for the destination market, and AQL workmanship sampling. Tape is sensitive to heat and humidity in storage, so check that cartons ship with appropriate liners and that the factory controls warehouse conditions in summer months.
